•
3.0 RESULTS
Vegetation species compositton, cover, and production is highly
variable throughout the pinyon-junlper type (Plate 1) on the study area,
depending on the micro environmental conditions at each ape cifte site.
Site characteristics range from barren knolls to small pockets of dense
oakbruah understory vi thin the pinyon-junlper type.
Approximately 39.0 acres of the picryon-juniper type to be affected in
the Revision 1 Area and 8.6 acres of undisturbed pirryon-juniper type in the
Barren Ridge area were quantitatively sampled.
3.1 SPECIES LLST
A List of plant species encountered in the pinyon-juniper type Ss pre-
sented in Appendix B. The pinyon-juniper type on the study area is pro-
bably not suitable habitat for any of the five plant species currently
listed by the U.S. Fish and G111dlife Service (1982) as Threatened or
• Endangered in Colorado, however three species presently identified as
lacking sufficient information to make a determination on their status have
been reported from the general area (Scott Peterson, The Nature
Conservancy, personal communication, July 1983). These species are
Atriplex pleiantha, Lesauerella pruinosa, and Phlox carriofila. Yery
little work has been conducted to determine the abundance and distribution
of these three species in the general area (Scott Peterson, The Nature
Conservancy, personal communication, July 1983). These three species have
not been reported on the study area, however these species could not have
been identified during this or previous studies due to the time of growing
season in which the studies were conducted.
3.2 SAHPLE ADEQUACY AND SUITABILITY OF REFERENCE AREA
A summary of sample adequacy for all quantitative vegetation baseline
data collected 1s presented in Table 3.1. Sufficient samples were taken to
meet the required 80x confidence level (d-.1) for all except the produe-
tivity and tree density data (Table 3.1). The Nmin value for productivity
date on the affected area vas 222; Nan vas 204 for the reference area.
