23.7 feet, for a ratio of 2.5 cubic yards of overburden to one ton of •
coal. Approximately 9.4 acres of coal will be mined. All mining will
occur in 1987.
Topsoil Salvage, Storage and Replacement
Two predominant soil types occur in the proposed Wadge Pit North Scraper
Area. Skylich loams and clay loams (map unit 66) comprise 45 percent of
the area and occupy the drainages and steep northeast facing slopes.
Splitro-Winevada foams and sandy foams (map unit X8) comprise 55 percent
of the area and occur on the moderately steep southeast facing slopes.
Suitable topsoil will be salvaged from the major disturbance areas (spoil
stockpile area, pit area, and adjacent disturbance, roads) associated with
this Wadge Scraper Pit. Topsoil salvage depths for the Skylich and
Splitro-Winevada map units are about 3.5 and 2.0 feet, respectively.
These salvage depths were utilized in the August 1986 Topsoil Balance (Tab
9, Attachment 9-4) that was completed for the Seneca Renewal Application. •
The salvaged topsoil will be stored at the revised stockpile location BB
shown on Exhibit 12-1. Proposed stockpile BB was relocated to provide an
adequate buffer strip between the stockpile and the future Wolf Creek pits
and associated haul road. Thus, contamination or rehandle of the stored
topsoil will be minimized (Tab 9, Attachment 9-1, Topsoil Handling
Schedule, Page 9-9).
Topsoil salvage and redistribution at Seneca is generally limited to late
spring, summer, and fall periods when surface soils can be handled with
minimal degradation (Tab 9, Attachment 9-I, Page 9-9). However, when
climatic conditions are favorable, Peabody requests approval from the
Division to salvage topsoil during the winter and early spring seasons.
Replacing salvaged topsoil will continue during late spring to early fall.
Peabody proposes to salvage topsoil from the Wadge Pit North Scraper Area
during the first quarter, 1987. Approved brushing techniques will be •
utilized prior to topsoil salvage. Topsoil will, when feasible, be
2 Revised 03/10/81
