Lamm
Governor

June 6, 1983
Mr, Tom Wainwright
Colorado Project Manager
Seneca Coals Ltd.
10375 East Harvard Avenue, Suite 400
Denver, Colorado 80231
RE: Technical Revision No. 3 to Permit No. C-005-80
Auger Mining Proposal
Dear Mr. Wainwright:
The Division has reviewed the above referenced technical revision
request. The Uivision proposes to approve the request based on the
following findings.
• Auger Mining - Rules 2,06.9 and 4.23
Seneca Coal Ltd. is requesting a technical revision approval to allow
them to auger mine coal from the highwalls of three existing pits
within areas proposed to be the location for auger mining operations lie
totally within the currently approved permit boundaries. Augering is
proposed to be conducted within both the Wadge and Lennox seams.
The pits proposed to be utilized in conducting the downdip augering
of coal are from 1,000 to 2,500 feet in length, Therefore, the plan
conforms with the regulatory requirements for maintaining access to
adjoining underground coal reserves for purposes of possible future
recovery. The proposed extraction will not effect the potential
recoverability of the adjoining coal reserves remaining beneath the
economically recoverable surface coals.
No augering operations will be conducted within 500 feet horizontally
from active or abandoned underground mining operations. In conformance
with regulatory requirements, augering and subsequent reclamation
activities will occur contemporaneously with existing surface mining
activities at the Seneca II coal mine.
•
423 Centennial Building, 1313 Sherman Street Denver, Colorado 80203 Tel.
