Governor
c/o Steigers Corporation Greg E.watcher
Exec,awe Director
6551 S. Revere Parkway, Suite 250
Michael B.Long
Englewood, CO 801 1 1-641 1 Division Director
RE: Process Solution Analysis,Yankee Gulch Project,File No. M-99-2
Dear Mr. Nielsen:
Enclosed are memoranda prepared by Harry Posey of the Division of Minerals and Geology staff regarding the
above referenced application. The memo analyzing public comments on the application from General Chemical
will be used to formulate the Division's recommendation due June 4, 1999, but requires no response from
American Soda. The memo analyzing the chemistry of the solution mining process brine discusses the need for
additional sampling and analysis of the solution. The process solution must be analyzed for the WQ2 list of
parameters from Table 3 of the Yankee Gulch Ground Water and Surface Water Monitoring Plan dated April 22,
1999. Please note that the analyses required under WQ2 are for dissolved metals, i.e., the sample water must be
passed through a .45 micron membrane filter prior to analysis. Please specify a timeframe to complete the
required analysis of the process solution.
In a related matter,Tables 2 and 3 from the Ground Water and Surface Water Monitoring Plan were discussed
with Steigers Corporation personnel in telephone conversations on May 26 and 27, 1999. For many of the
parameters listed in the tables, the MDLs and PQLs are too high to be useful. Replacement tables must be
provided with updated MDLs and PQLs prior to the date for consideration of the application on June 3, 1999.
The detection levels for a parameter should be below the applicable standard for that parameter as has been
discussed in previous correspondence, meetings, and telephone conversations on this subject.
This letter and the attached memoranda are being placed in the Division's confidential file on the Yankee Gulch
Project. If you have any questions, please contact me.
Sincerely,
Allen C.
