<br />WALLACE GRAVEL PIT <br />MONTEZUMA COUNTY COLORADO <br />EXISTING VEGETATION: Overstory tree species are Rocky mountain <br />Juniper, and Pinon pine. Dominent shrubs are Gambol oak and <br />Mountain mahogany which comprise over 80 percent of the plant <br />community. Other shrub-like plants occurring in small amounts <br />include Mahonia (Oregon grape), and Yucca. Forbs occur in small <br />or trace amounts. Lupine, yarrow, and thistle are the most <br />prevalent. Grasses are almost non-existent on the site. Cheat- <br />grass and bluegrass were the only species observed. <br />SOILS: The soil on the site is formed <br />It is moderately deep and appears to be <br />vary from 3 to 25 percent. Erosion hazard <br />RE VEGETATION RECOMMENDATIONS: Recommended dates for seeding are <br />June 15 to July 15, or during the dormant period, October 1 to <br />April 30. Method of seeding should be by use of a grass drill <br />equipped with depth control bands. If area is broadcast seeded <br />then a follow-up harrowing or light dragging operation should be <br />performed to cover the seed 3/4 to 1 inch deep. Fertilizer <br />should be applied ,Just prior to seeding and incorporated into <br />the top 3 or 4 inches of soil.
