There would 6e no effect to federally listed T&E Species from activities
associated with the proposed exploration program.
USFS Sensitive Species
There are numerous mammals, birds and amphibians listed as Sensitive
Species by the Forest Service in Region 2. However, habitat is lacking for all
but a few of these species. Those that are known to occur, or for which
suitable habitat exists in varying amounts within the area studied or in
nearby areas include: American marten, northern goshawk, olive-sided
flycatcher, purple martin and northern leopard frog. Of these species only
the olive-sided flycatcher was observed during the studies. Over the past
few years the olive-sided flycatcher has commonly been observed during
bird surveys for this and other projects in the North Fork Valley and around
Grand Mesa. This bird commonly nests in spruce-fir forests. No spruce-fir
would be removed during construction of roads and drill sites. There would
be no impacts to the viability of this species from the proposed activities.
There is suitable northern goshawk nesting habitat in the area, but no active
or inactive nests were found during the nest site surveys. Only a few trees
would be taken during construction activities. Considering that large
expanses of suitable nesting and foraging habitat occur in the area there
would be no impacts to the viability of the species.
There are waters suitable for the northern leopard frog in the project area,
but no ponds or other water sources will be affected by the proposed
operations. There would be no impacts to the viability of this species from
the proposed operations.
There would be no impact to the viability of any USFS listed Sensitive
Species from activities associated with the proposed exploration
program.
USFS Management Indicator Species
There are 8 Management Indicator Species (MIS) listed by the USFS for the
GMUG (Grand Mesa, Uncompahgre and Gunnison National Forest), which
were addressed. Habitat surveyed around the drill sites and along access
roads is lacking for 5 species including: Abert's squirrel, Brewer's sparrow,
4
