Areas seeded to the harsh site mixture will be seeded in late fall,
or, when good soil moisture conditions permit, in early spring. If hydro-
seeding is used, mulch will be applied in a separate operation after
seeding. Smaller areas may be handraked lightly after seeding but before
mulching.
For drill seeding, care will be taken to ensure that the prooer equip-
ment is used in the proper manner. The two critical factors are seed rate
and depth. Since the seed mixture proposed includes both large and very
small seeds, it will probably work best to mix these types separately
and use a drill with different seed boxes to deliver each at the proper
rates and to plant at the proper depths. Such equipment is available for
this type of work.
Several different types of mulches may be used. These include a jacklin
(brand) organic mulch, a conwed wood cellulose mulch, and hay or straw. The
jacklin mulch can be applied either in a hydromulch slurry, with or without
a tack ifier, or dry using a conventional fertilizer spreader. The conwed
mulch is applied with a hydromulcher. Hay or straw will be blown into dis-
turbed areas and either mechanically crimped, tacked with a tack ifier, or
held down with netting. Nitrogen fertilizer rates will be adjusted depending
on the C/N ratio of the mulch used in order to accomodate net immobilization
of this nutrient. All disturbed areas to be revegetated will be mulched and
fertilized. Jacklin or conwed mulches, where used, will be applied at 1 ton
per acre. Hay or straw mulch will be applied at 1.5 tons per acre. The
Rockcastle Company will endeavor to procure clean, good quality mulch mater-
ials.
Reclamation at the Grassy Creek Mine will not involve irrigation. Pest
and disease control will be employed as required. In particular, stands
will be managed by mowing, fallow and judicious use of herbicide as prev-
iously described in order to control weeds. An early spring (pre-emergent)
. application of 2, 4-D may be used for broad leaf weed control. This herbi-
cide may be used in conjunction with a nurse crop or not.
