4.4.2.3 Final Reclamation
All of the topsoil was used for the refuse pile reclamation so none was a available for
the portal sites or the No. 1 or No. 3 Mines. Topsoil salvaged at the new fan site for the
No. 1 Mine was redistributed at that site.
Soil material was not imported for the reclamation project. The No. 1 and No. 3 Mines
were reclaimed by regrading the areas with a balance of cuts and fills to allow the
utilization of overburden material for plant growth media. The soil material present
~ after regrading was amended so it would be plant growth media. At least six inches of
soil, suitable for plant growth media, was present throughout reclaimed regraded sites.
The soils at the No. 1 and No. 3 Mine were analyzed for suitability as plant growth
media and found to be suitable with the addition of certain amendments. The soils
~ report dated September 23, 1987 is presented in Appendix 3-S.
Backfill and Grading
• Areas disturbed by mining activities, including all temporary ditches, sediment ponds
Several areas revegetated during interim reclamation were redisturbed during final
grading and reclamation. This "interim" reclamation work was designed to add to the
stability and aesthetics of the site during mining, as well as to provide opportunity to
test and improve revegetation techniques prior to the commencement of final
reclamation at the end of operations.
and slurry ponds will be filled and graded to achieve the desired final contours as
shown on the Final Reclamation Plan Maps (Drawings D-4-15 and D-4-16). Disturbed
areas which would not be re-disturbed during subsequent mining operations or final
regrading were reclaimed as part of the interim reclamation project as shown on the
~' Interim Reclamation Plan Maps (Drawings D-4-17 and D-4-18).

The purpose of final grading operations was to provide acceptable slope configurations
and to provide the best possible conditions for successful revegetation. For the mine
area (excluding the refuse disposal area for this part of the discussion), this is
especially important, since revegetation work will be conducted without benefit of a final
topsoil cover.
4-47
~l`
11-99
