RECElyED
July 2, 2004 JUL 0 3 2004
RE: Hazeltine Mine, MLRB 112 Permit Application # M2004-031
Division of AHinerals & Beale®y
Deaz Mr. Coney and Mr. Keffelew:
Regazding the proposed Hazeltine mining operation, I am OPPOSED to ~ mining in this azea.
The Hazeltine community has been here since the 1950s and my family has lived here for the past
eleven years. NEVER did we expect that the river valley below this peaceful neighborhood would
be disrupted by the negative impact of mining activity and the associated noise and pollution.
If the permit is issued, the quality of life in this neighborhood would suffer drastically for the
duration of the mining and quite likely afterwazd for years to come, unless responsible conditions
were placed on the applicant Based on past precedence of most gravel mining operations in the
azea, the following lists some of the reasons whp I am OPPOSED to the granting of any permit to
Aggregate Industries, or any-other such industry. -
• Nuisance factors such as fumes, dust, noise, lights, and vibration are not only annoying but
potential health issues
• Property values will [ikely decrease substantially
• Blight factors such as tall weeds, abandoned mining equipment, and chain link/barbed wire
fencing are unsightly
• Existing wildlife habitat has already been displaced by operations to the north of proposed site
and these animals are now found migrating into the neighborhood. In our yard alone we have
seen wild turkey, deer, skunk, coyote, prairie dog, fox, and raccoon.
• Often heaz alarms in the area, from existing gravel operations, in the eazly morning or late night
hours
• Many gravel operations (both current and abandoned) along Brighton Road, following the
South Platte River from approximately 108i° north into Brighton have been allowed to become
eyesores, tainting the landscape to look like an industrial wasteland
A seven-year mining operation so close to an established community is unique and unnecessary.
Please consider the daily negative impact this long-term project would likely have on our quality of
life.
Thank you for hearing our concerns.
Sincerely,
Shirley Metcalf-Sabin
8193 Counter Drive
Henderson, Co 80640
P.S. If, over community objections, the county elects to grant a permit, several conditions should be
considered and applied to any future mining.
