Colorado Boulevard
Deaver, Colorado 80222
Dear Mr. Schulz;
This letter is in response to your request for additional information
concerning the bald eagle situation at the Rienau No. 2 mine.
Bald eagles roost in cottonwoods along the White River and hunt in areas
up to 30 miles away from their roost site. Observations indicate that
bald eagles infrequently hunt in the open areas along Curtis Creek, with
the majority of this use occurring on Loner Curtis Creek from the canyon
` • mouth (T.2N., R.93W., Sec. 32, approximately one mile south of Rineau ~f2)
south to the White River. The steep topography and dense vegetation around
the mining Brea does not provide optimum hunting areas for this species.
With the infrequent eagle use in the vicinity of this mice, it is speculated
that mining activities will not adversely impact the bald eagles in this area.
Sincerely,
B. Curtis Smith
Area Manager
White River Resource Area
.`
Save Energy and You Serve America!
0-5
.. _ ~ -
