Seeding mixtures and rates -
Two sedding mixtures are recommended and are attached. One
mixture consists of mid to tall grasses and could be used in areas
where little traffic is desired such as steep slopes. The other
mixture cons ista of short to mid grasses which could be used in
areas not readily susceptible to erosion.
if trees or shrubs are desired, supplemental irrigation la recom-
mended.
The seeding rates provided are on a pure live seed basis. If
seed is broadcast, the rates should be doubled.
Time of seeding -
Seed should be planted between November 1 and April 30.
Mulching -
Mulching !s definitely recommended for this site due to the adverse
conditions expected. Several types of mulch could be considered.
A native grass hay mulch could be applied at a rate of 4,000 pounds
per acre of air dry material. At least SO percent of the mulch by
wlight should be 10 inches or more in length. The strew should also
be free of noxious weeds. The mulch should be crimped into the soil
after application to prevent it from blowing or washing away.
Manure can be used as a mulch at a rate of 20 tons per acre, Granular
or p'owderq manure will not work.
There are manufactured mulches available for small areas of 2:1
slopes but the costa are too high to be considered for the entire
area.
In lieu of a mulch, a cover crop crop could be planted such as sor-
ghum at a rate of 10 to 15 pounds per acre, If more growth is
produced than desirable, or if sorghum produces mature seed, the
cover should be cl&pped to not less than approximately 8- to
12-inch stubble height and should be removed the area, Rowe should
not exceed 20 inches, The grass mixture would then be drilled into
the existing cover that fall or following spring.
Weed control for establishment -
Broadleaf weeds should be sprayed while actively growing and
before reaching 4-6 inches in height. The seeded greases should
be in the 4 leaf stage prior to spraying. Selective herbicides
such as 2,4-D should be applied according to labeled instructions.
I[ may be necessary to spray twice the first year and once the
second year after planting.
