' lion of several elevated pH readings at various NPDES locations. All elevated pH
readings were reported to the Colorado Water Quality Control Division.
The continued dry conditions and summer drought have reduced the number of active
discharge sites after the spring runoff season. All surface water flows continue to
decrease. There was one storm event exceeding the intensity of a 10-year, 24-hour
event. Storm-related runoff associated with a precipitation event in July recorded 19.4
cfs of water down Coyote drainage. However, due to the exceptional capacity of Coyote
Dam all runoff was contained with no discharge through our NPDES point.
Drainageway reconstruction and stabilization, plus other water channelization and
velocity decreasing practices have reduced the sediment loading and erosive potentials
across the mined areas at Trapper.
2.7 Spoil Spring Sampling
During 1989 we conducted the annual spoil spring inventory across our mined land
boundaries. This survey is required by Section 4.8.5.2a of the permit. The survey was
made April 17th-20th.
Results of the 1989 survey revealed no spoil springs that meet the 5 gpm criteria. In
1988 only one spoil spring (Cottonwood) exceeded the 5 gpm criteria. However, due to
lower-than-normal precipitation in 1989, even the Cottonwood spring flowed c 5 gpm.
~~
2.8 Monitoring Well Abandonment
Trapper requests Division approval to abandon three inactive groundwater monitor
wells during 1990. Abandonment will comply with Colorado regulation (4.07.3(2,3} and
previously approved abandonment procedures specified in TR#32 (1987).
The wells proposed for abandonment were designated sites GA-3, GA-4 and GA-5.
These wells have been temporarily abandoned by Trapper since 1977. Wells GA-3 and
GA-4 were installed in October and December, 1974, as part of the EIS baseline pro-
gram. Well GA-5 was drilled in the spring of 1975. All three wells were drilled to moni-
tor the QR coal seam aquifer near the coordinates of 406,000 N and 1,417,700 E. Two
active monitoring wells (GA-1 and GA-2) are still monitored quarterly as per our
approved permit (Section 4.8.5.2a).
The reason for abandonment is to allow construction of a safety truck runaway ramp
above the haulroad switchback referred to as the "S-curve:' Construction is proposed
for 1990.
Wells GA-3 and GA-4 were replicates of Well GA-1. They were monitored from instal-
lation until August, 1977. See baseline quality data in Section 2.7.5.2. Well GA-5 was
never monitored as the initial drill hole collapsed above the zone of perforation prior to
~, caking installation. No data exists.
Trapper proposes the Division approve this abandonment as part of this annual report. ~
