SHERMAN, SECRETARY, MINED LAND RECLAMATION BOARD
FROM: DR. JERIS A. DANIELSON, DEPUTY STATE ENGINEER
SUBJECT: STERLING READY-MIX, LOGAN COUNTY, APPLICATION FOR MINING AND
RECLAMATION PERMIT
We have received additional information concerning the above referenced
application and the following comments are provided for your consideration:
I. The applicant proposes to use a portion of the water right
he owns in the Lowline Ditch to augment the South Platte
River for depletions resulting from evaporation of water
from the proposed gravel pit lakes. The Lowline Ditch has
averaged in excess of 6,000 acre-feet in diversions for the
period of 1950-1971 according to the applicant's engineer.
2. The mining plan will proceed over a period of approximate l}'
30 years and the amount of lake surface to be exposed
annually is set forth in Table 2. By the year 2004, the
annual evaporation is estimated to be approximately 65 acre~-
feet. Of this amount, 51.80 acre-feet is expected to occur
in the irrigation season when a demand for water normally
occurs.
3. In order to assure adequate protection of other water right;
owners, the applicant must also remove irrigated land from
production to balance historic consumptive use with the
consumptive use resulting from this gravel mining operation.
The land irrigated by the applicant's water right is used
to produce corn which consumptively uses approximately 18
to 20 inches of irrigation water per year. Therefore, by
the year 2004, approximately 34.5 acres of irrigated land
will have to be removed from irrigation to compensate for
the new consumptive use.
