<br />If flooding of the pit does occur, the dewatering of the pit to remove flood waters should <br />be done in a controlled manner. Monitoring of any pit highwalls should be done to <br />determine if rapid drawdown is creating any instability. Due to the fact that the pit walls <br />will be a sand and gravel, they should be able to drain quickly and prevent excessive <br />buildup of pore pressures. <br />4. The analysis is based on assumptions using soil properties that are generally found in the <br />South Platte River. If unusual strata or lenses of soil aze found in the vicinity of the two <br />structures, they may impact the safety factors for mining setbacks. Field inspection of <br />geologic anomalies by a professional is recommended. <br />5. The theoretical analysis presented here does not supplant adequate field inspection during <br />the mining operation. Visual inspection of the highwalls along the critical azeas during <br />the mining operation is the best method of monitoring. If significant stress cracks appeaz <br />behind the mining highwall, remedial action can be taken to stabilize these azeas prior to <br />them becoming a problem. <br />Page 4 <br />
