NOTICE OF INTENT TO EXPLORE PAGE 11
INVOLVING REhIOVAL OF 250 TONS OR LESS OF COAL
STOVE CANYON COAL EXPLORATION PLAN AREA
I ~ §2.02.2(2)(8): Methods to be used to conduct coal exploration and
reclamation.
Drilling Operations
CAM proposes to drill 9 exploration holes in the XPA. Holes will be rotary-drilled and
nominally five to-six inches in diameter to predetermined core points, cased as
necessary, and the coal zone cored by PQ wireline methods. PQ coring produces a
2.980-inch hole and a 1.875-inch core. Drilling will be with air, air with water injection, or
water with synthetic polymer lubricant. Cuttings pits will be necessary at all locations
drilled by conventional methods. Locations of proposed holes and new roads required
for access are shown on Figure 1, Index Map.
Drilling will be accomplished with two drill rigs. Atruck-mounted core rig such as a DR
24 or equivalent and atruck-mounted rotary rig RD-20 or UDR 2000 or equivalent. The
truck mounted drilling rigs will be accompanied by a water truck, typically of 3,000
gallons capacity; aflat-bed service truck; and smaller pickup trucks as necessary for
service and transportation to and from the drilling sites. Water will be imported.
Some or all of the holes may be geophysically logged. The equipment necessary for
such work is typically mounted in a full-size Suburban-type 4 x 4. If only oil-field logging
equipment is available, larger trucks, similar in size to a 3,000-gallon water truck, may be
• required.
Road Construction
To the extent possible, CAM intends to utilize existing roads for access and, where
available, disturbed sites (wide spots, borrow pits, etc.) for drilling sites. Approximately
1.8 miles of new road construction and 1.7 miles of reclaimed road re-construction will
be required if all 9 holes shown on Figure 1, Index Map are drilled. These road
segments are also shown on the referenced map. Road construction and reclamation
will be in accordance with applicable standards of the BLM for temporary access roads
and with performance standards of the Division of Minerals & Geology for light-duty
roads (§4.03.3). Access roads will be constructed using a Caterpillar D-9 class
tractor-dozer where necessary and a D-5 class tractor-dozer or equivalent or smaller
track -mounted bulldozer, and aproportionally-sized backhoe such as a John Deere
410C where possible. The reclaimed roads to be reestablished were constructed for
coal exploration purposes.
CAM does not anticipate any blasting during the proposed exploration program.
Excavated Earth And Debris Disposal
Topsoil will be removed from drill sites and new roads and stored for use in reclamation
in accordance with applicable portions of §4.06.
Drill cuttings, if any, will be shoveled into the holes during sealing, scattered around the
drill site before reclamation, or both.
