QZ
• Jumbo Mountain Drilling Program
West Elk Mine, Delta and Gunnison Counties
Class III Cultural Resource Inventory of
Six Proposed Drill Sites
Prepared for:
Mountain Coal Company
Somerset, Colorado
Prepared by:
Metcalf Archaeological Consultants, Inc.
Eagle, Colorado
Abstract
Mountain Coal Company has proposed an exploratory drilling
program on Jumbo Mountain involving six locations on public land
administered by the Bureau of Land Management. To comply with
laws and regulation regarding federally permitted actions,
cultural resource surveys of these locations were required.
Metcalf Archaeological Consultants, Inc. (MAC) completed cultural
resource investigations at these locations and along access
• corridors that require new roads. The feasible extent of effect
of these exploratory drilling operations was circumscribed by
topography and heavy brush. A total of approximately five and
one-half acres was surveyed at the proposed drill sites and along
new access corridor. In addition, reconnaissance and spot
inspections were conducted along approximately 3000 feet of
existing road on both public and private land that may require
minor upgrades. Weather conditions were good and ground cover was
generally open, providing very good surface visibility. No
cultural resources were located and cultural resource clearance
for the proposed undertaking is recommended.
Introduction
Mountain Coal Company proposes eight exploratory drill hole locations in
the Jumbo Mountain vicinity of Delta and Gunnison Counties, Colorado, for
development of the West Elk Mine. The proposed drill sites are located in
portions of legal sections 24, 25 and 26, Township 13 South, Range 91 West
(Figure 1). Because several of these proposed drill sites are located on
public land administered by the Bureau of Land Management, permitting for this
undertaking must comply with applicable federal regulations regarding
documentation and treatment of cultural resources. For this reason Metcalf
Archaeological Consultants, Inc. (MAC), was contracted to complete a cultural
resource inventory of six of the proposed drilling sites and access corridors.
The two proposed drill sites on private surface in Section 24 (JMB-1 and JMB-
. 2) were excluded from these requirements.
