Townsend
Montrose, CO B1401
Mr. Fike,
Enclosed find three copies of the negative finding report for a cultural
resource inventory that I conducted on July 15 for six proposed exploratory
drilling sites on Jumbo Mountain. The six drilling sites and the two short
segments of new access are on BLM administered public lands. Sections of
existing roads which may require minor upgrading are mostly on private
surface. All open, level surface around the proposed drilling sites which
might feasibly be impacted by the drilling activity or parking of support
• vehicles was subjected to intensive surface inspection. Weather conditions
were excellent and surface visibility was excellent at most locations. At
locations JMB-6 and JMB-7 surface visibility was patchy, but areas of
excellent surface visibility were adequately distributed across the locations
to assure that no significant cultural resources were obscured by locally
dense vegetation. The new access corridors at JMB-3 and JMB-5 were covered
with tall vegetation, but the growth pattern was generally open enough to
provide adequate surface visibility. The exception to this consisted of steep
slopes along the access corridor to JMB-5. These slopes were heavily
overgrown by woody and herbaceous vegetation and provided poor surface
visibility, but were also unlikely settings for the location of cultural
resources. No evidence of cultural resources was found in any of these
locations and cultural resource clearance has been recommended.
If you require any clarification or additional materials, do not hesitate to
contact me.
Sincerely,
Carl Spath, Ph.D.
Senior Staff Archaeologist
. xc: Mark Scanlon, Mountain Coal Company
M ETCALF ARCHAEOLOGICAL CONSULTANTS
(703) 326 6244 • FAX: (303) 3285245
P.O.
