CO 80203
RE: Permit No. C-005-80, Request for Minor Revision No.
24
Dear Mr. Renner:

1700 South Vale
Flagal ell, Aritoaa 66001
(602) )745257
On .lanuary 16, 1981, a mechanical failure resulted in the
collapse of the Bucyrus-Erie 770B dragline boom at the
Seneca II Mine. The boom has been taken in for repair and
ti)e dragline is expected to be back in service on or about
March 15, 1987.
In the interim, with the 7108 out of service, a scraper
fleet has been employed to remove overburden in order to
meet customer demand. Up to now the scraper fleet has
been removing overburden in the Wedge East Pit where the
dragline was operating when the mechanical failure
occurred. However, in order to maintain sufficient
production, it will be necessary to move the scraper fleet
to the area discussed below.
8y means of this letter and attached application form,
Peabody requests approval for Minor Revision No. 24 to
Permit No. C-005-80 to enable the use of the scraper fleet
in that area immediately east of the existing north-south
Wedge Pit as shown on the enclosed Exhibit 12-1a,
Operations Plan for Minor Revision No. 24. The area
requested for temporary scraper operations is 300 feet
wide by approximately 2000 feet long, or about 14 acres,
and is currently scheduled for production in 1987 and
1988.
Drainage from the temporary scraper area is totally
controlled by Ponds 004 and 007 (see Permit Renewal,
Exhibit 7-7, Surface Hydrology Map). All topsoil from the
temporary scraper area has been salvaged. The overburden
from the temporary scraper area will be backfilled into
the north-south Wedge Pit.
