1.3 Integrated Weed Management
GCC will implement an Integrated Pest Management ("IPM") approach for control
of noxious and pest weeds within the project area. An IPM approach allows GCC
to select from one or several methods of weed control for various environmental site
conditions within the project area. The following weed control methods will be
considered for the project area:
1) Cultural-Prevention of unnecessary disturbance. Planting acceptable
aggressive plant species for site colonization may be undertaken;
2) Mechanical-Mowing, pulling, disking and plowing may be used on
weedy species that can be controlled mechanically;
3) Biological-Introduction of insects or other biologic agents which are
known to inhibit or prevent reproduction of noxious weed species. Biological
controls will be coordinated with the Colorado Department of Agriculture's
Insectory in Grand Junction or other knowledgeable agencies; and
4) Chemical-Application of appropriate herbicides by a licensed
applicator. All herbicides will be applied in accordance with manufacturer's
recommendations and in accordance with Colorado state laws.
The growth habit and IPM options for each of the listed noxious and pest weed
species in Pueblo County (Table 1) are contained in APPENDIX C. In some cases,
only one control method may be warranted, while in other cases a combination of
control methods may be appropriate. Control methods selected will be dependent
upon species of concern, and location and extent of infestation.
The use of mechanical, cultural and biological control methods will protect
pollinators, reduce hazards to wildlife and endangered species, reduce the
CCC Red Rocks Mine ,rJ 03/03/03
