1
' There appears to be no rare or endangered animal; species residing on the Lo~aan
Wash property or immediate environs. Prairir_ ru~~l Peregrin Falcons hava been
siyhtcd over the area, but detailed studies have shown neither to he nesting
there.
Surface water at the Logan Wash site is not used fur domestic or industrial
purposes. Springs and streams serve wildlife and cattle. No change in the use
of surface water is envisioned.
7. Fish and Other Aquatic Life
' As mentioned above, springs and streams on *_he Logan Wash sit? serve wildlife
and cattle. tdo fish or amphibians have been noted on the Logan 4iash site.
' B. Probable Effects of the Proposed Action
1. Topography
' Neither subsidence rior uplift is expected. Potential changes in surface position
over Retort .~4 have been monitored by precise level surveys made before the re-
' tort was blasted ar.d front tune to time afterwards v+ith negative results. Precise
level surveys will continue to be made over Retort "4 in the sum~~rer of 1973 to
check for subsidence or uplift.
' Local, artificially-induced seismic shaking effects are anticipated from blasting
for conventional mining operations and for creating the in situ retorts. Seismic
measurements made c':uring the shot in Room hlo. 4 in August 1975 indicate that
' shaking intensities only one-tenth of that generally perceptible by hwnans occurred
at Grand Valiey. Readings closer to the blast site ranged from 0.059 at 4100 feet
away to 0.49 at 3000 feet away. Plo significant damage, distress, or slope failures,
hov+ever, apparently resulted from the ground shaking.
The mineral v+aste disposal piles represent a long-term impact that cannot be
' avoided. However, the piles are being developed to resemble natural talus and
v+ill be vegetated to blend with the surroundings when completed, pursuant to
permit from the t•lined Land Reclamation Board. Accordingly, it is deemed not to
' be a significant adverse impact.
Reclamation plans with respect to all lands affected by Oxy's Logan Wash operations
are described in detail in the Reclamation Plan submitted to the Joined Land Re-
' clamation Board.
2. Industry
No industry exists under the Logan Wash site, and no negative impact upon industry
is projected (a positive impact for the oil shale industry is expected) as a
' result of the proposed action.
3. Agriculture
No agriculture exists on the Logan Wash site. Cattle grazing may continue during
and after the proposed action.
-3-
1
