STATE OF COLORADO
Bi11 Owens, Governor
DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES
DIVISION OF WILDLIFE
AN EQUAL OPPORTUNITY EMPLOYER
John W. Mumma, Director
6060 Broadway
Denver, Colorado 80276
Telephone: 13031 297.1 192
Mr. Mark Austin
RG Consulting Engineers, Inc.
336 Main Street, Suite 203
Grand Junction, CO 81501
January 31, 2000
Re: Monument View Gravel Pit
Dear Mr. Austin,
For 6Yildlije-
For Peop/e
The Division of Wildlife (DOW) has reviewed your gravel mining proposal and conducted a
site review. Because of the sparse vegetation, mostly greasewood, few species inhabit the area
at present. These species include cottontail rabbits as the largest, aside from an occasional
coyote or redfox, as well as assorted rodents, songbirds and herptiles. Hunting raptors will be
mostly affected by the loss of a hunting area and the prey animals that once occupied it.
However, these birds will merely "move over" into adjacent undeveloped lands as the other
creatures will do. This project alone will have a minimal impact to the local wildlife. But as
this area continues to develop, there will be less "vacant" or undeveloped land and fewer
places for the local wildlife populations to be able to move. It will be the cumulative impacts
of many projects in the area that will affect and change the local wildlife populations. Thank
you for the opportunity to comment.
Sincerely ~,
L-I k ~ ~ ~l C9~x--
Terry M. Ma~eson
District Wildlife Manager
cc: Yamashita.
