. Revised December 7, 1992
Modification of Both Surface Water Monitoring
and Alluvial Groundwater Monitoring Locations
Background
Colowyo currently monitors surface water quality parameters
and flow at three separate locations - one site on Taylor Creek and
two sites on Goodspring Creek. The Goodspring Creek sites are
located so that one location is downstream from mining activities
with the other site located upstream of mining activities.
Alluvial groundwater quality parameters and water levels are
monitored at three separate locations - one site at the Gossard
Loadout and two sites on Goodspring Creek. Once again, the
Goodspring Creek sites are located so that one location is down
gradient from mining activities with the other site located up
gradient of the mining activities.
Proposed Modifications
. With the anticipated expansion of mining activities to the
south of the current mining location, it has become necessary to
re-establish both the Goodspring Creek upstream surface water
monitoring site and the alluvial groundwater monitoring site.
For the surface water monitoring site, Colowyo intends to
establish a monitoring site (called New Upper Goodspring) located
below the confluence of the West Fork of Goodspring Creek and the
main Goodspring Creek. This location is sufficiently above any
anticipated mining activities and should serve as a good
representation of undisturbed conditions.
For the alluvial groundwater monitoring site, Colowyo intends
to utilize an alluvial well drilled by Consolidation Coal Company
(called A6 Updip Alluvial Well) in 1984 for their baseline
hydrologic monitoring of the Danforth Coal Lease. This well is
located in the same vicinity as the proposed surface water
monitoring site, and should also serve as a good representation of
undisturbed conditions.
Both locations of the proposed New Upper Goodspring and A6
Updip Alluvial Well are shown on Map 37, Water Monitoring Sites for
Permit CO-019-81. Additionally, the A6 Updip Alluvial Well
completion report and available data is included in the following
pages.
