.~
GENERAL SITE INFORMATION
The proposed mine site is located approximately one mile east of Somerset, Colorado, in
the valley of the North Fork of the Gunnison River. The terrain is mountainous and
dissected by steep, V-shaped valleys. Elevations at the plant site range from
approximately 6,000 feet at the river to 6,500 feet at the portal Slopes range from 0 to
60%. The general geology of the area consists of gently north-north-east dipping beds of
sandstone, shale and coal The soils in the area are generally shallow, loamy to clayey.
Several slides and slumps have been identified on the property, but no known faulting
exists. Refer to soils investigation reports and landslide study for further information.
An attempt will be made to dewater unstable areas prior to construction.
The site lies along the westerly flank of the West Elk Mountains within the drainage basin
of the North Fork of the Gunnison River. At the plant site both Sylvester Gulch, to the
east, and "No Name" Gulch, to the west, drain into the river. The average annual
precipitation is ten inches along the river. Most of the precipitation falls as snow during
the winter months, while the sparse summer precipitation consists of isolated
thunderstorms. Temperatures range from 10°F in the winter to 90°F+ in the summer,
with the mean temperature being about 70°F. Depth of surface freezing is approximately
54 inches. The plant site is densely covered with tall grasses and shrubs, consisting
_ • primarily of Gambol oak and Saskatoon serviceberry. Additional information on wind,
humidity, temperature and precipitation is available upon request.
Due to environmental concerns, all contractors shall keep disturbed areas to a minimum so
as not to destroy vegetation or wildlife habitats unnecessarily.
