Ponchak:
Idox~aood, Colorado 81l~23
pnTe:September 26, 1978
_ This iTill constitute the Soil Conservation Service reply to your request
for soil and vegetative information for your use in applying for mine
reclamation permits on the lranadium Lode, Hertert, Ellison and I}awkeye ]•?ines
in San 13igael County near Slick Rock, Colorado.
I;y field visit to each of the nines today con_rirmed the broad soils des-
cription given for soil unit ;;3 in the Dolores River Fasin report. Since
I nave urovided you with a copy of the Dolores ;over Fasin report during
earlier ,rSre evaluations, I am not enclosing a copy finis time, if you
should 'Happen to need an additional copy, I rori 11 be happy to send one upon
your request.
s has been the case in the past, we do not ha~re a detailed soil survey
covering this area in the office. 1•yv field review indicated that the
grassed mesa tops and slopes have the only potential as sources of soil
for topsoiling, and it is marginal. It a~~peared that the grassy slopes
have 12 to 18" of soil material mixed faith cobble and rock. The Vanadium
Lode mine generally had less than 12" of soil material over sandstone bed-
rock. :i'loDeS ranged from nearl;,r level on the mesa tops to 45n + on the
sideslopes. There are no live i~ratercourses that originate on the units.
The attached vegetative inventory sheets list the existing vegetative
co-!~~unities on andis~srced areas of the units. also included is the
percent o£ ground cover ar,d present total annual production. vs 7 have
discussed lath ;;ou in the east, the ve~ei.ati•~e cor:_Tunities in this area
are a co;rposite of those plants I ;could e~.;ect to find in t}:e Foothills
areas and the loser Saltdesert area. Total herbage production from t'-,ose
plants t},at are found in the Foothills repine is lowered because of the
csouthy conditions.
]cr reve~etation efforts I would su;;~est that you consider the folloiaing
rirture, per acre: 3 pounds ivordan crested wheatgrass; 3 pounds Vinall
Russian rrildrye; !~ Bounds Sodar streambank i:heat;;rass, and 1 pound of
yellow s~;eetclover. To break up tl~e outline of any disturued areas, you
may Trish to hand-pick and scatter seeds or transpznt so;ne si,rubs that are '
indigenous to the area.

. •.\.-,
- ~.: ; i
