Permit Issuance: If a Final Decision regarding a permit application is to approve, partially
approve, or approve with conditions, we are required to issue a permit to the applicant upon
submission and approval of a reclamation bond in the amount approved in the Final Decision.
There is no time limit following a Final Decision within which an applicant is required to
submit a bond. Within ten days following permit issuance, we inform local government
officials of the permit issuance and of the location of the lands within the permit azea.
B. Environmental Impact Studies
Information pertaining to potential environmental impacts from proposed coal mining operations is
provided in our permit applications. If a proposed coal mining operation would affect federally-
managed surface lands or coal, the permit application may contain or refer to information from federal
environmental assessments or environmental impact studies that may have been conducted, or are in
the process of being conducted, in conjunction with federal leasing processes. These federal leasing
processes aze typically managed by the US Bureau of Land Management. Once we find an application
for a coal mine Complete, the applicant is required to post a copy of the permit application in a public
location (usually a county courthouse) for pubic review. You would be able to review information in
the application regarding potential environmental impacts from the mine at our office in Denver or at
the location where the public copy of the application had been placed.
C. Permitted Coal Mines and Coal Exploration in Fremont County
There is currently one permitted coal mine in Fremont County. This is the Southfield mine, permitted
by Energy Fuels Coal Inc. This non-federal underground mine ceased production in 2000, and is being
reclaimed at this time. Information regarding the Southfield mine is available for review in our office
and at the Energy Fuels Coal Inc office in Florence (719-784-6395).
We are awaze of only one coal exploration project in Fremont County having any recent activity. This
is the Northfield Project, operated by Northfield Partners LLC. Information on this project is enclosed.
[ hope I have responded to your inquiry satisfactorily. Please let me know if I may be of further
assistance.
Sincerely,
c,~~~ ~~ Q
Daniel I.
