This is a shallow, somewhat excessively drained soil on low ridges and mesa tops at elevations of 7,600 to 8,300 leaf. It formed In material weathered from basalt. The average precipitation is.about 9 inches, the average annual air temperature is about 41 degrees F, and the frost-free season lasts about 90 days. Included in mapping are small .areas of Garita cobbly loam and Luhon loam. Also included are areas contain- ing basalt outcrop. Typically, the surface layer is brown very stony loam about 4 inches thick. The subsoil is pale brown very stony loam about B inches thick. Tho substratum is very pale brown very stony loam about 4 inches thick over basalt. Permeability is moderate. Available water capacity is very low. Runoff is medium, and the erosion hazard is moderate. Effective rooting depth is about 10 to 20 inches. This soil is used as native range for sheep and cattle. The potential native vegetation pn this soil is dominated by winterfat, fourwing saltbush, Indian ricegrass, and blue grama. If the range deteriorates, the proportion of these _ desirable plants decreases and the proportion of plants such as threeawn, pricklypear, snakeweed, one ouic, fortis increases. Undesirable weeds and annual plants invade and become abundant if the range condition be- comes poorer. Seeding is not advisable because of the low rainfall, very low available water capacity, and very stony soil. Deferred grazing, cross fencing, and stock water devel- opments help prevent range. deterioration and promote the growth of desirable plant species. Rangeland wildlife, such as antelope, cottontail, coyote, and jackrabbit, are best suited for the habitat on this droughty soil. Forage production is typically low, and livestock grazing needs careful management it wildlife and livestock share the range. Livestock watering devel- opments are used by a variety of wildlife species. Urban development is limilad by the shallow depth to bedrock and large stories (fig. 14). Building and road designs can be modiTied to offset these limitations. Diffi- culty in the installation of water and sewer lines may be partially overcome by the use of heavy equipment or blasting. Septic tank systems and trench-type sanitary landfills are not suited to this shallow soil. The capability subclass is Vlls.
