Dept, of Agriculture
Soil Conservation Serviee
CQ7SER'7ATIt]t P1AN HAP AND
SOIL AND CAPABILITY MAP LEGEtID SHEET
Different kinds of Boil, range sites, or woodland sites are separated on the
map by solid black lines, Within each area is ar. identifvine symool or
name, The following aymbol~ are shown on your map:
S-ymlwl or Site Name
54-Travelers very stony loam, 3 to 25 percent
slopes. This is a shallow, excessively drained soil on
hills, ridges, and mesas at elevations of 7,600 Io 8,500
(eel. It formed in material weathered Irom basalt. The
average annual precipitation is about 9 incites, the aver-
age annual air temperature is about 41 degrees F, and
the frost-free season lasts about 00 days.
Included in mapping are small areas of Gar~ta cobbly
loam, Monte loam, and Cumbres loam. Also included arc
areas of basalt outcrop and some very stoop to extreme-
ly sleep bedrock escarpments ranging in height Irom a
few feet to t00 feet or more.
Typically, the surface layer is brown very stony loam
about 4 inches thick. The subsoil is pale brown very
stony loam about 8 inches thick. The substratum is very
pale brown very stony loam aboui 4 inches (hick over
basalt.
Permeability is moderate. Available water capacity is
very low. Runolt is medium to rapid, and the erosion
hazard is moderate-to high. Effective. rooting depth is
about 10 to 20 inches.
This soil is used as native range for sheep and cattle.
the potential native veyelation ~s dominated by Indian
ncograss, wintertat, blue yrama, and srnallm amounts of
lourwing sattbush, rabbitbrustt, and sand dropseed. II the
range deteriorates, the proportion of Indian ricegrass and
wintertat decreases and the proportion of sand drop~
seed, blue grams, lhreeawn, pricklypear, lorbs, and
woody shrubs increases. Undesirable weeds and annual
plants invade and become abundant it the range condr
lion becomes poorer. '
Seeding is not advisable because of the low rainfall,
steep slope, stones, very low available water capacity,
and lack of soil depth, Deterred grazing is generally
needed to prevent range deterioration and to p~omole
the growth of more desirable plant species.
Rangeland wildlife, such as antelope, cottontail,
coyote, and jackrabbit are best suited to the habitat on
this droughty soil. Forage production is typically low, and
livestock grazing needs to be managed carefully ~t wild-
life and livestock share the range. Livestock watering
developments are used by a variety of wildlife.
Urban development of the soil is limited by the shallow
depth to bedrock, large stones, and slope. Special de-
signs are needed for roads and buildings. Special equip-
ment and blasting may be necessary for construction.
Septic tank Systems are not suitable for this steep, shal-
low soil. The capability subclass is Vlls.
OeneraLized Descriptions
(Detailed descriptions are available it
your Soil Conservation Service office.)
RANGE SITE: BASALT HILLS
