It is not anticipated that the minine operation will have a
detrimental impact on water quality because of the low rate of
water inflow into the mine and no projected discharge from the
mine. During the next years of mining, an in-mine monitoring
' program including water quantity and quality will be established.
4.0 IN MINE WATER QUANTITY AND QUALITY MONITORING
' Colorado Westmoreland, Inc. maintains an extensive
hydrologic monitoring program for the Orchard Valley mine. This
program includes monitoring of water quantity and quality on
' surface streams, ponds, springs and in shallow and deep wells.
The hydrologic monitoring program will include in-mine monitoring
of the following items:
' o measurements of inflow rate and duration of
flow at the occurence of any measurable
' inflow;
o metering of water discharged out of the mine
(if any);
' o recording of water quantity imported into the
mine;
o collection of water quality samples at points
with measurable inflows (annually).
Any discharge of about 1 gpm or more is considered a
measurable inflow. At this time there is only one location
within the Orchard Valley mine where the discharge of water from
' a fault is larger than 1 gpm. Because the inflow of water into
the mine is typically limited from several weeks to several
months at any particular location, it is important to record the
time the inflow occurs and the time inflow ceases.
The inspection of the mine with a written record of all
' water inflow occurences, inflow measurements and estimates,
including water sample collection, should take place at least
twice a year. The most advantageous time for the in-mine
monitoring would be in June (one month after snowmelt).
The procedures for in-mine monitoring, water sample
collection and field measurements of temperature, pH and electric
' conductivity will be the same as applied for surface hydrologic
monitoring. The specific monitoring requirements will be
presented in a separate document.
' The hydrologic in-mine monitoring should be expanded at the
time Stevens Gulch and East Roatcap Creek are undermined.
' to ui u~1n.i.F:u ~:~wi cnvr.
