,.- •
Page 2
The Mount Garfield Formation is the lowest member of the Mesa Verde
Group and consists of buff and gray fine-grained and medium-grained
sandstones and gray shales. The regional dip is approximately 2° to
the northeast into the basin.
The most consistenC coal within the lease is the Cameo seam. The bed
ranges in thickness from 17 to 22 feet. In section 15, lU, and 3 the
Cameo seam appears to split into an upper and lower bench. Present
throughout most of the bed is lenses of bone coal and carbonaceous
shale.
The existing mining operation unit is bound by two high angle normal
faults. These faults appear to diverge to the northeast. The vertical
throw on the east fault is approximatley 70 feet. 1'he west fault lies
west of Che McClane portal and has not intersected the hlcClane Canyon
mine workings.
Based upon limited knowledge from test entries and drill holes, the
roof rock consists of gray and black shales of varying hardness and
competence. The floor rock consits of shales in some places and a
medium-grained friable sandstone elsewhere. No floor heaving has yet
been observed within the 1•IcClane Canyon mine.
Overburden thicknesses range from U - 1,400 fee[ on the subject lease.
Figure 2.1-11 (of the Mine Plan) is an isopach map of overburden to the
Cameo seam. Most of the overburden on the lease area ranges from 100
fee[ (in the central portion of lease area) to 1,000 feet (in the
northeast portion of lease area).
According Co Sheridan Enterprises, Inc. no other valuable mineral
resources have been identified in this area. There appears to be no
conflict with oil and gas interests. All of Sections 10 and 15 were
withdrawn from the simultaneous oil and gas list on March, 1977 by the
Colorado S[a[e Director of the Bureiu of Land Management.
.In the Douglas Pasa area there have been small coal mining operations
going on. These are, however, no records or information regarding
previous mining operations in the a:ea.
P
