PURPOSE AND NEED FOR ACTION <br /> <br />As a part of the Federal coal management program, the Department of 'the <br />Interior, through the Bureau of Land Management, conducts leasing of Federal <br />coal to assure adequate coal supplies are available 'to meet national long- <br />term energy requirements ahd adequate reserves are available to continue <br />existing production. <br />Colorado Yampa Caal Company has applied for coal lease application C-26914 <br />under the emergency coal leasing criteria in 43 CFR 3425.1-4. This tract <br />of Federal coal ie directly adjacent to leased Federal coal where mining <br />operations are currently underway. The recoverable coal will be by-passed <br />if this tract is not leased in time to be included in the mining sequence. <br />Therefore, this environmental analysis ie being prepared to assess the <br />• impacts that will result from leasing this tract. The proposed action is <br /> to lease 30 acres and 201,600 tons of Federal coal which would alleviate <br />a by-pass situation. <br />The proposed lease tract covers the following lands: <br />T. 4 N., R. 86 W., 6th P.M., (Routt County) <br />Section 9: li~S4Ay-r-6SIticSN-t T1~Sw ~SW~, Sw~~S~+~~Su~ /y/~~ <br />7Y~. <br />II.
