.. i •
I. PURPOSE AND NEED FOR ACTION

As a part of the Federal coal management program, the Department of 'the
Interior, through the Bureau of Land Management, conducts leasing of Federal
coal to assure adequate coal supplies are available 'to meet national long-
term energy requirements ahd adequate reserves are available to continue
existing production.
Colorado Yampa Caal Company has applied for coal lease application C-26914
under the emergency coal leasing criteria in 43 CFR 3425.1-4. This tract
of Federal coal ie directly adjacent to leased Federal coal where mining
operations are currently underway. The recoverable coal will be by-passed
if this tract is not leased in time to be included in the mining sequence.
Therefore, this environmental analysis ie being prepared to assess the
• impacts that will result from leasing this tract. The proposed action is
to lease 30 acres and 201,600 tons of Federal coal which would alleviate
a by-pass situation.
The proposed lease tract covers the following lands:
T. 4 N., R. 86 W., 6th P.M., (Routt County)
Section 9: li~S4Ay-r-6SIticSN-t T1~Sw ~SW~, Sw~~S~+~~Su~ /y/~~
7Y~.
II.
