Alfalfa in Rangeland Seed Mix
NG71 and PCC recognize that alfalfa (Medicago saliva) is a competitive species when
over-seeded on reclaimed lands in northwest Colorado. The seeding rate for alfalfa
in the rangeland seed mix (0.25 PLS lb/AC) represents less than two percent of the
mix. This rate has been approved by the DMG for use et the Seneca Mine since the
late 1980~s and has resulted in established stands in which the relative cover of
alfalfa is approximately two percent. At this composition, the presence of alfalfa
is similar to the presence of a dominant forb in nearby native plant communities.
Furthermore, commercial evailabi Lity of native legume plant materials is generally
poor, and experience has shown that establishment in reclaimed areas has been lou.
In summary, alfalfa is a palatable and nutritious forage plant that will enhance the
utility of revegeteted lends for a variety of wildlife species and livestock, with
proven performance in reclamation of mined lands. When seeded at proper rates, it
is a viable alternative to native legumes when considering the poor availability and
performance of the latter. Thus, ample justification exists to retain alfalfa in
the rangeland seed mix at the specified rate.
15. Pasture Land Reference Areas
The area proposed for the dryland pasture reference area has been in dryland
pasture for of least 10 years (personal communication with Jim Kige r, Sr.
Env.
