Townsend: <br />Powderhorn Coal Company has submitted <br />to the Colorado Mined Land Reclamation <br />C-01538, C-078049, C-02740, C-024998, <br />for the legal location of the lease ar <br />March 26, <br />a mine plan permit appl <br />Board for Federal Coal <br />and C-029889. (See App <br />eas.) <br />Underground coal mining operations in and adjacent to the le <br />began in 1899 and have run continuously to the present. Acc <br />th.e current mining plan, no additional surface lands will be <br />during the life of the permit. All coal will be mined throw <br />existing surface facilities of the Roadside and Cameo Mines. <br />is a possibility, however, for the occurrence of subsidence <br />where underground mining will take place. <br />Several cultural resource inventories have been conducted wit <br />lease areas, They include: "An Archaeological Clearance of <br />Lands for the Cambridge Mining Company" (Conner 1975); "Antiq <br />Inventory for Cambridge Mining Company: Coal Mine Portal and <br />for Coal Mine Debris Disposed in Coal Canyon and Coal Gulch, <br />Colorado" (4lignall and Conner 1977); and portions of an inven <br />entitled "Final Report of an Archaeological Survey of the Wes <br />Colorado Coal Leases" (Hibbets et al 1979). All total, over <br />the lands in the lease areas have been inventoried for cultur <br />resources at a class III level. Copies of the Conner reports <br />contained in Appendix II. A total of 28 sites and 38 isolated finds were <br />identified by Hibbets in coal leases C-029889 and C-024993. All sites <br />identified by Hibbets are located in Transect 7. This transect was <br />recommended in the.Hibbets report to be considered for nomination to <br />the National Register of Historic Places as an archaeological district. <br />Enclosed is the unsuitability report for coal leases C-0153°, C-078049, <br />C-020740, C-024998, and C-029889, which is the formal application of <br />unsuitability criterion 7 as is required under 43 CFR 3461.1. <br />
