<br />ENVIONMENTAL ANALYSIS <br />CN THE <br />OHIO CREEK #2 DSIL]E <br />• iii ii iu iii <br />Introduction: Henry L. and Opal Weaver are applying for a Federal lands <br />permit under the Colorado Surface Coal Mining Feclamation Act tc mine <br />coal at the Ohio Creek Coal Mine No. 2 (CC Mine No. 2). The OC P;ine No. <br />2 is located approximately 16 miles northeast of Gunnison, Colozado and ~ <br />produces approximately 3000 tens of coal per year from Federal Coal Lease <br />No. CO-069942. <br />The market for the 0},ic Creek #2 mine is dependent upon the local <br />' domestic heating market. Consequently, their production is governed by <br />demand. Presently Ohio Creek #2 produces an excellent quality lump and <br />stoker coal. <br />The adjacent abandoned Ghic Creek #1 mine operated from 1922 until 1943. <br />The OC P;ine LIO. 2 was opened in 1943 ar~d operated until 1962 when it <br />voluntarily closed. Henry 47eaver reopened the mine in July, 1968. Since <br />1943 the OC #2 mine has only disturbed about 3.2 acres and no further <br />surface disturbances are anticipated according to the mine plan. <br />The Weaver's have sutmitted an application. to the Bureau of Land <br />Management requesting they offer for lease 120 acres of Federal Coal <br />lying adjacent to t}~e present Federal lease. This application is being <br />evaluated by ELM. This operation is being concluded solely en Federal <br />coal lands. The surface is in private ownership. <br />
