The accronym TREND stands for Trinidad Regional <br />Economic and Natural resource Development corporation. <br />Not only do we treasure our coal, natural gas, helium, C02, <br />timber, mountains, streams and lakes, we treasure our historical <br />heritage which dates back to the opening of the southwest by the <br />Santa Fe Trail, for which early traders used Fishers Peak as a <br />navigational landmark as they headed for Raton Pass. This .same <br />peak_.is now_the target of a coal strip..mining.operation. <br />As the countywide community and economic development agency we <br />have been asked to comment on this application request, and we <br />have a number of questions about his request for a state permit) <br />for which we don't have answers. J <br />Mr. Davis has stated that although his permit request has been on <br />file for a considerable length of time, there has been no nega- <br />tive feedback. This is probably true, as most of the public has <br />been unaware that this rumored project was in the works. <br />Our office has been inundated with negative response from both <br />local businesses and residents during the past week that the <br />project has gone public. Because of the proposed transportation <br />routes for the coal to reach the railhead there will probably be <br />additional concern expressed from the City of Trinidad for public <br />safety and potential street and bridge damage. <br />Las Animas Counq~'s Camnemrry mld Business Development Agency <br />
