Box G
Steamboat Springs, CO 8dt77
Dear aIr_ .lrni'ts:
re: ~degvary of 8eclsmatitm
The DtheT ttto bDard members Bpd S who made thcr_spectinn nn Novemb°_-
'lOth vonld 7.i?ce to formz7.ly report onr Dpiaion of goon eSforts. As
you remember, ve looked at a plot in the Pit j transect and another
in the Fish Creek transect. In general, ue felt that both these spa='_
areas have been adequately reclai.ed. We were please3 to note that
there~is no significant soil erosion in either area. We were quite
surprised to find that there are virtually no noxious needs in either
field. Both of then= areas are nou capable of being used as produc-
tive pastureland. This is quite an accomplist~~ent for strip mined
land in this county.
The seeding near Pit j is off to a very good start. I don't think
anybody could get any more gros+th in two years on a dryland grass
seeding in this county. If ue have even average precipitation next
year, that planting should really take of£. The intermediate uheat-
grass looks like a particularly good plant for your purposes.
The '197+ planting near Fish Creek is, of course, a little Sarther
along. Zt is obviously well established since it appears to be pre-
venting erosion on n very steep slope. It is interesting to note
that the sngebrush is coming back on this site. This tends to indicate
that one native species, at least, will probably reestablish itself
whether you want it or not.
It appears that your company is making a good start on reclaiming its
strip mined lands. Please keep up the good work.
Sincerely,. '
`--~` ~~
t}lenn Werner, President
Hoard of Supervisors
