Kent Gorham
Page 2
March 21, 1997
It is our understanding that there are no eligible or need data
sites in the areas of potential effect for the P3 Portal, the R1/R2
Portal, the R3/R4 Portals and the Refuse Area (No longer in mine
plan). Work may proceed in these areas.
The R1/R2 Haul Road, the Load Out and the P3 Haul Road have several
need data sites within the areas of potential effect. Further
staking and engineering, in consultation with the archaeologist,
needs to be completed to determine what the effects will be to
these sites.
The Rail Spur has one need data site, 5LA7186, in the area of
potential effect. Avoidance does not appear to be feasible and
further survey work may be necessary in this area.
There are potentially eligible and eligible sites in the Surface
Mine area and the P1/P2 Box Cut. Further consultation will be
needed as eligibility and project effects are known.
We look forward to working with you on the results of future survey
work (sedimentation ponds, access road & haul road for the R3/R4
Portals, P1/P2 haul road, Lorencito Canyon access road, etc.) and
on determinations of eligibility and effect. If we may be of
further assistance please contact Jim Green at 303-866-4674.
Sincerely,
James E. Hartmann
State Historic Preservation Officer
JEH/WJG
cc: F. Kirby, OSM
A. Stanfill, ACHP/with report
A. McKibbin, Metcalf
