~ • •
(~)
I
I
the Area Mining Supervisor has prepared a file memorandum con-
cerning mining methods and maximum economic recovery of the coal
resources of the tract. We are in agreement with the USGS ob-
seevations. The mining, plan addresses the feasi.bi.lir.v
of alternative mining methods (4.1.9, page 6), CWI a~;rges Lhat
it will investigate such methods but that its ability to use
longwall and shortwall methods is impaired by limitations on the
lease size designed to insure the integrity of t}ie short term
leasing criteria. As you k~iuw, Colcrado lJestmoreland Inc.
originally proposed recovery of an additional 5' of bottom coal
when pulling panels, and we will ask that the appropriateness of
this and other methods be reassessed by USGS when furt}ier data is
available. CWI is conunitted to achieving the highest recovery
possible and will review other thick seam mining operations in
other areas, which may provide additional information on potential
techniques to achieve increased recovery percentages. Any particular
technique must be suitable for the conditions present at the
site, and consistent with safety considerations.
The CWI-NIPSCO contract sets forth the amounts of coal to be
delivered, and CWI intends to use its utmost efforts to meet the
required delivery dates.
II.
