DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES
D Monl? Pascoe. Exec ulrve DnCei O~

MINED LAND RECLAMATION DIVISION
DAVID C. SHELTON Director
Richartl D Lamm
Governor

DATE: November 22, 1982
T0: Mike Long ~ / ~. ~ /~
i ~
FROM: Roy L. Cox, Hydrogeologist '
RE: Reply to the Concerns of Gene Hamilton over Issue of the
Chimney Rock Permit
Chimney Rock Coal Company's Martinez Strip will not impact the quantity
or quality of ground and surface waters which supply Mr. Gene Hamilton's
well. This statement applies to areas to be permitted under the proposed
document (e.g. the existing pit and the Barren Ridge). The reasoning
which supports this statement is discussed below.
Mr. Gene Hamilton's property is located approximately one half mile east
of the Chimney Rock permit area (see attached map). The Hamilton well is
59 feet deep and draws water mainly from the Stollsteimer Creek alluvium
(e. g. gravels and sands). The Stollsteimer Creek alluvium has a very
high ability to transmit water (e.g. transmissivity of over 100,000
gpd/f t. ). The alluvial ground water is quickly replenished by water
flowing in Stollsteimer Creek.
The Elow of ground water in the Stollsteimer Creek alluvium is Erom east
to west. Mr. Hamilton's well receives ground water which enters the
alluvium upstream of the well. The quantity and quality of ground water
which supplies Mr. Hamilton's well is therefore dependent on the amount
and quality of water in Stollsteimer Creek upstream of his well. For
the mine to effect Mr. Hamilton's well, the mine would have to effect the
quantity and quality of water upstream of the well. The mine is located
below the level of Mr. Hamilton's well and over one half mile
downstream. Any water which may become polluted by the mine will only
effect water quality in alluvial and bedrock aquifers directly adjacent
to the mine and downstream of the mine (e. g. water will not flow
upstream).
The "C" seam, the lowest seam to be mined, outcrops above the stream
channel and the alluvium of Stollsteimer Creek. The shales and
silts tones below the "C" seam currently prevent the movement of water
from the Pictured Cliffs sandstone aquifer.
423 Centennial Building, 1313 Sherrn an SIrPDI D~nvPr.
