-2-
A. herbaceous pc~duction (factoring
out woody plait production in ocdet
to determine if this was causing
the bivatiate distribution)
B. aspect (each sample was assigned
an aspect; N,S,E,W, and analyzed
to detecmine if there were signifi-
cant diffe[encea for covet and
production between aspects)
C. drainage bottoms (were analysed to
determine whether there was a
significant difference between
cover and production in these a[eaa
and the rest of the samples)
I waa unable to explain the higri variation and spread using any
of the above attatifications. It ie my feeling that the
Division must request that the petmittee resample cover and
production for each vegetative community, using methods
acceptable to the Division.
The petmittee hs provided information on woody plant densities
in the November~l0 submittal. The Division has two concerns
with respect to this information. The information is expressed
in units of length (m) not density (e.g, ff/m2). From the
discussion I deduced that the sampler was utilizing a
point-centered quarter method of sampling for density. Thia
method ie acceptable to the Division, however it appears that
the statistics (S, Nmin) have been calculated based on length
(m) rather than density. I feel this to be improper in that we
ace not interested in comparing the central tendency of
length's, but densities. In order to calculate the desired
statistics, the density of each point should be determined,
yielding one sample unit. The mean, standard deviation, and
minimum sample size should then be calculated from these values.
The need for reference areas was discussed at the November 1
meeting, and it was mutually agreed that reference area's would
not be requited to be sampled or maintained given the total
acreage of surface disturbance (see November 4, 1982
correspondence from D.H. Emling Co.). Aevegetation standards
will be derived from the assembled baseline data.
3.The Division requested an expanded qualitativediecussion of
each vegetation community. It was agreed in the November 1
meeting that the petmittee would expand the qualitative
discussion of each vegetative community.
