Peter Matthies <br />President and Chief Executive Officer <br />Storm King Mines, Inc. <br />9137 East Mineral Circle <br />Englewood, Colorado 80112 <br />Dear Mr. Matthies: <br />Thank you for your letter of April 19, 1984, describing your company's efforts <br />to initiate the hydraulic mining of coal on the western slopes of the Rocky <br />Mountains. Hydraulic mining can be an economically promising coal extraction <br />method in certain types of deposits. The Bureau of Mines is very interested in <br />the success of your efforts and would like to learn more about the specifics of <br />this operation. <br />If you so desire, a meeting could be arranged between yourself and <br />representatives of our mining research activity. The meeting would be directed <br />towards identifying areas of common interest and potential areas for <br />cooperation. I must advise that it is unlikely the Bureau of Mines would be <br />able to provide any kind of direct financial assistance to support your mine <br />development efforts. Such assistance is outside of our legislative established <br />charter. Our mission is to provide the technology and minerals knowledge base <br />to assure that the Nation has adequate and dependable mineral resources to <br />meet industrial and national security requirements. To meet this mission, the <br />Bureau collects information on domestic mineral deposits and operations, and <br />conducts research to provide the scientific knowledge base and innovative <br />technologies to increase domestic production of energy and minerals in safe, <br />economical, and environmentally responsive manner. <br />Mr. Harry Nicholls, Assistant Director--Mining Research, has been advised of <br />your interest in a cooperative activity.
