Richard D. Lamm
Governor

DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES
Davitl H. Getches, Executive Director
~~
MINED LAND RECLAMATION DIVISION
DAVID C. SHELTO N, Director
DATE: May 8, 1984
T0: Sandy Emrich
~~I ~~~~I~~~~~~~~~~~
FROM: Michael Long
RE: Energy No. 3 Findings, Existing Environment; Operation Plan; Soils
Existing Environment
Mollisols, Aridisols, and Entisols are the soil orders found within the
general area. The disturbed mining area is predominated by Mollisols and
Aridisols. These soils range from deep, well drained loams to shallow,
excessively drained sandy loams. Deeper, better drained soils are encountered
along the toes of ridges with soil depth decreasing with elevation along the
slope.
No toxicity problems have been identified within the disturbed area. Major
restrictions encountered relate to slope steepness, erosion potential, depth
to rock, and permeability. All soils found within the disturbed area fall
with~°the SCS land use capability classification of grazing land. Erosion
potential appears to be the most limiting factor. Although these soils are
all classed as grazing land, they are a good source of plant growth medium
within restrictions being physical rather than chemical. Redistributed soils
are capable of establishing a diverse, self sustaining vegetative cover.
Operation Plan
Basically, there is no topsoil salvaging plan to be implemented at the site.
Soil has been salvaged and stockpiled for over 99% of the disturbed area. The
only new disturbance consists of approximately 5 acres, 18" of soil will be
salvaged and directly re-applied when this area is disturbed.
As stated above, the operator has already salvaged and stockpiled the majority
of the soils required for reclamation. Enough material has been salvaged to
al]ow for the redistribution of approximately 2' of material over the entire
site. Depths of material range from 2.7' to 1.5' depending on the specific
area. The depth of material replaced should be adequate for successful
reclamation.
Backfilled spoils will be left in a rough condition to aid in the elimination
of slippage surfaces during topsoil redistribution. In addition, this will
help increase water infiltration and root penetration. Topsoil will then be
redistributed using scrappers, along the contour.
423 Centennial Building, 1313 Sherman Street Denver, Colorado 80203 Tel. (30~) 866-3567
