Flessrs. Banta and Daws
October 29, 1981
Page 5
*Upon filing of the revision, a public notice will be published for four
(4) weeks in the North Fork Times stating that the current mining and
reclamation permit application on file with the Colorado Mined Land
Reclamation Division and the Office of Surface Mining has been altered
to include mining in an adjacent area.
61e realize that the timetables proposed above provide an optimistic
schedule for approval of the permit revision and does not represent a final
approval deadline. However, they do serve as an important goal for all
parties involved with the permit revision.
We must again emphasize that the Bear Coal Company is facing a real
emergency. The immediate need for approval of mining in the adjacent area
is imperative if we are to maintain present levels of production and
employment. Unlike many major coal producers, the company does not have
vast amounts of coal reserves or large amounts of financial backing.
41e have strived throughout our 47 year history to be a good neighbor in
Gunnison and Delta Counties and to provide jobs for Colorado people.
Locally owned since 1934, the Bear Coal Company has likewise maintained a
proud tradition of employment and safety while producing coal for both
local and industrial use. We would like very much to continue providing
employment for local people and producing coal ~•rhich helps our nation's
energy problems.
Again thank you for your attention to this matter. We realize the short
time frame involved with our planned facility relocation and mining. We
want to continue to maintain open lines of communication with both the
Division and OSM. Specifically, I invite any of your staff working on this
matter to feel free to contact J. Paul Storrs, Alan Czarnowsky or me with
any questions or requests.
Sincerely,
BEAR COAL C014PANY
~ ,~/~
William Bear
President
WB:cm
Enclosures as Noted
cc: Dave Shelton /
Dan Matthews
Floyd Johnson
J.
