Suggested Sampling Procedures
1. Overburden - Surface lfines "
~ ~ a. Drill hole spacing should be approximately ore hole
' per square mile. A nunimum of three drill holes should
I 6e sampled (this may require a closer drill hole spacing
for smaller mines).
b. Grill hole de nth should be down to and includir.q the
strata irvnediately underlying the coal seam. Dri11
holes should be located to ma.rinize overburden thicY.ness.
c. Generallu, each individual stra him should be sampled. For
thinly bedded strata (interbedded strata with individual beds
less than 4 feet thicY.), samoles may be composited in 4-foot
intervals. All carbonaceous units (coals and carbonaceous
shales) in excess of one foot should be sampled. Composite
sampling maq Fie done when an individual stratum exhibits uniforn
color, lithnlnml and mine r.iloyy.
2. Roof, Floor, Interburden and Coal - C'ndgrgrovnd "fines
f a. Dci11 hole spacing should '~e anoroxinately nna Tole ver s!+care
li mile. A minimum of three grill roles should be sa,^~nled (this
may require a closer r r'11 :±o le spacing for smaller mines).
b. For each coal seam to'•be mined, the folloroina samples should
be analyzed; a composite sample from the first ten fee[ o:
strata overluinq the coal seam, a composite sample from the
first five feet of the stratum underlying the coal seam, a
sample of the coal seam, and samoles of interburden, partings,
splits, etc.
