Preliminary Adequacy Review
Bear Coal Co., Inc. - Bear Mine
Paqe Two
2.09,4 Cultural and Historical Resources
No further action concerning cultural resources is required of the Bear Mine unless
further surface disturbances are to take place and/oz cultural resources discovered. '
2.04,5 General Description of Hydrology and Geology
1. The applicant must supply complete geology and hydrology maps of the general
area. The geology map should delineate faults, folds, landslides, intrusive evidences
and major jointing. The hydrology map should include the location of regional
alluvial and bedrock aquifers, as well as the direction of ground water flow in the
general area. The location of the seventy-seven (77) springs mentioned in the text
must also be Zocated on the hydrology map. (2.04.5(1)(b)J
2.04.6 Geology Description
2.04.6 (2) Underground Mining
1. She logs of the drillholes located on map 2.04.6(2)(a)-3 should be provided
with the depth where first water was encountered indicated on each log. This infor-
mation is needed to facilitate the determination of probable hydrologic consequences
of mining. (2.04.6(2) (a) (i v) (A))
2. The analysis of the C seam coal should differentiate by percentage the sulfur
compounds encountered. Those of concern are pyritic sulfur, organic sulfur and
sulfate sulfur. The different sulfur compounds vary in toxic and acid forming
capabilities,
3. On page 42 the applicant states that water is pumped from the mine to maintain
the competency of the floor shales for safety re.ssons. She applicant must provide
data on the rate of production of mine water by mine inflow data or aquifer tests
and the methods of disposal of this water.
2.09.7 Hydrology Description
2.04.7 (1) Groundwater Information
1. If insufficient data is available to determine water table extent and storage
capacity from ARCO's observation wells, as stated on page 33 of the permit, Bear
Coal must supply a water monitoring plan to determine this baseline information.
Recharge, storage and discharge characteristics must also be determined (see Section
1.02.6(3)). (2.09.7(a) 6 b))
2. The low permeability of the sandstone aquifers must be documented (page 45).
(2.04.7(b))
3. The applicant must address the probability of vertical migration ^f groundwater
through fracture and fault zones. (2.09.7(a & b)). This can be accomplished through
a mapping of underground seeps and springs on a mine workings map.
