(8090 phreatophyte)
Site n4 - meadoo-+ clear of trees northr•+est of Brimstone Corner;
T2 terrace (r+ith small irrigation ditch on east side)
- Curleycup Gumr•+eed (indicative of disturbed area or overgrazing)
- Fringed Sage (common upland plant on gravelly to loamy soils)
3. The only area visited r•+hich appeared to be clearly subirrigated
was the area to the north of the southern gaging station along
Ward Creek. This area is dor•+nstr-eam of the area to be mined,
and a number of springs and seeps v+ere located in this area.
Hor+ever, the Tl terrace r•+hich is subirrigated is thin (generally
less than 25 feet on each side of the creek), and this area has
limited agricultural usefulness due to the rugged and steep
terrain of the area (e.g., the Rollins Sandstone outcrop).
4. From the reconnaissance site visit, it r•+as apparent that areas
of agricultural significance in the Ward Creek and l•lilliams
Creek valleys are flood irrigated fields on cleared areas on the
T9 and higher terraces (which are considerably higher than the
creek and not subirrigated).
Therefore, based on the above reasoning, test pits to study subirrigation
are not recommended at this time. However, piezometers in the alluvial
ground r•+ater system and a more thorough vegetation survey will provide
definitive information to determine the extent and importance of subirriaa-
tion along Ward Creek and Williams Creek. The piezometers will also help
determine the relationship of tine shallor•+ ground o-+ater to the streams and
ditches.
13
