<br />APPFNnTY A <br /> <br />RECONNAISSANCE 14INE WATER INVESTIGATION AND <br />RECOMMENDED MONITORING PROGRAM <br />On March 25, 1982, an underground inspection of the Red Canyon I4ine was <br />conducted by t4ike Bishop (KT) and Larry Reschke (Gt4CC). The purpose of the <br />tour was to observe points or zones of ground water inflow to the mine and to <br />develop a monitoring program that would meet the concerns raised by Roy Cox of <br />the Colorado Mined Land Reclamation Division (CMLRD). Cox's original memorandum <br />dated Jaunary 18, 1982, requested that GMCC: <br />"conduct a mine inflow study. This inflow study is needed to <br />assess the present impacts of mining on ground water. This inflow <br />study should include: (a) a map of all mine inflows on an updated <br />mine working map; (b) a table keyed to this map with the source <br />of inflov~s (i.e., faults, fractures, cleating, v~eeping roofs, <br />floors or walls, etc.), estimates or measurements of flov~ rates, <br />and mine inflow quality (i.e., pH, temperature, and electro- <br />conductivity); (c) a record of the amount of water imported into <br />the mine; (d) the amount of water discharged and/or consumed <br />v~ithin the mine; and (e) a narrative describing the occurrence <br />and handling of v~ater within the mine." <br />At a March 3, 1982, meeting, Roy provided additional clarification regarding <br />the mine inflow monitoring by requesting: <br />1. Measurements (or estimates) of flow from a point source (e.g., a fault <br />zone, syncline, etc.) should be made when possible. The water source <br />should be identified and pH, conductivity, and temperature should be <br />monitored if the flow rate is greater than 1 gpm. <br />2. 1f flow is issuing from an entire face, the source should be mapped, <br />the ~°ate of flov~ estimated, and the source (wall, roof, etc.) noted. <br />3. Reco~°ds of mine v:ater- inflow should be frequent enough to allow a <br />determination of Seasonal fluctuations in inflow. <br />An es tim~rte should be made of the post-mining ground water flow pattern. <br />If outflow through the portal is expected, a plan to seal the portal vTOUId be <br />appropriate. <br />8 <br />
