_r;.
2.05.4(2)(e)(iii) Planting Methods
The steep slopes in the vicinity of the reclaimed western portals .should
be left in a roughened condition following grading to allow For seed
catchment and coverage. The application should be amended to indicate
how this will be accomplished.
As requested the Preliminary Adequacy Letter, the 25 hawthorne seedlings
per acre should be planted in clumps in riparian areas immediately
adjacent to the river, rather than distributed randomly over the reclaimed
area. A comparable number of willow seedlings should also be planted
in the riparian zone.
Mulching Techniques - Rule 2.05.9(2)(e)(iv)
A mulch netting as is presently being used on the west portal embankment
will probably be required to hold topsoil and prevent surface erosion
of the reclaimed slope. The application should be amended to indicate
that excelsior or jute mesh will be tacked onto the western portal slope
following hydroseeding.
Revegetation Success - Rule 2.05.4(2)(e)(vi)
The applicant has requested that the Division set the revegetation
success standards for the Bear Mine for the parameters of herbaceous
cover and production, species diversity and woody plant density. The
Division will set these standards based nn site potential and land
use considerations.
The applicant has proposed a sampling plan for evaluating the success
of revegetation. The following alternatives and additions should be
incorporated into that plan.
The cover measurements should be taken along randomly located 25 meter
transects. A point frame and pin should be used to record 50 equally
spaced measurements per transect. A minimum of 10 transects would be
required. Herbaceous cover should be recorded by species (Ist and 2nd
hits on herbaceous vegetation should be recorded separately, with only
First hits on vegetation used in the calculation of percent cover).
Each separate transect would be 1 sample, with the percent cover value
for each sample determined by totalling the first hits on vegetation
and dividing by fifty. Hits on bare ground, rock, and litter should
be recorded separately. If sample adequacy is not met with 10 transects,
additional transects should be located and measured until adequacy is
obtained or 25 transects are completed.
Herbaceous production sampling should consist of clipping the herbaceous
vegetation in quarter meter plots located along the previously discussed
transects. Five plots should be clipped along each transect, a minimum
of S t_ra ns ec is (the first S randomly selected transects) wi 11 bn
required. If sample adequacy is not mat with this minimum number, more
randomly located transects should be sampled until adequacy is met or
as transects are sampled.
