research to identify specific sources for the study area. This
will include a file search at the Colorado Preservation Office,
bibliographic searches at local repositories such as Colorado
Historical Society, Denver Public Library, University of Colorado
Library, and the United States Geologic Survey Library at the
Denver Federal Center, and contact with mineral specialists at the
Craig District Office of the Bureau of Land Management who would be
knowledgeable about both current and historic trends in area coal
mining, and local interest groups. The purpose is to identify
sources and types of information available to support the context,
property type definitions and evaluation standards. The next step
in the research phase will be to evaluate the sources and proceed
with the actual research. The research will focus on two topics,
the first will combine the pertinent parts of the existing doc-
umentation into a preliminary context outline including
identification of preliminary property types, significant trends
and patterns in study area coal mining development that may become
subthemes and any significant innovations or individuals. Through
this process any appropriate linkages to RP3 themes will be
maintained and developed. Also, an effort to determine which
areas, such as Oak Creek, hold the greatest likelihood of
containing resources that are fifty years old within the survey
area. Any identified new subthemes, individuals or innovations
will be further researched.
From this documentary research the narrative portion of the
context will be developed. The discussion of property types and
their registration requirements will be done by combining the
extant historic photographs, such as those at USGS, and narrative
descriptions of local mines when they were either first built or
active with information gained during the reconnaissance to
develop reasonable and workable property type descriptions and
integrity levels for the registration requirements. Such work will
meet all specifications for a historic context as specified by the
Colorado Survey Manual and National Register of Historic Places
Bulletin 16. This research will be conducted prior to, during and
6
