The water for this <br />puritose la taken Prom the San Miguel River, at a distance of half ' <br />a mile above the present workings oP the mine, through a flume about <br />3,000,feat long; thence through a pipe line with a head of about <br />b00 feet to the pit or main workings. This water ie conveyed through <br />the giants at a pressure of about 140 lbs. The gravel when washed <br />Prom the, bank is convoyed through a sluice box, one half mile long, <br />Which is lined with 56 pound steel nails, its entire length, with <br />the exoeptdon of 200 feet, at the head of which is lined with steel <br />angle iron riffles. During high water the operations are carried on <br />in three shifts oP eight hours each, commencing at 7 o`clock, <br />3 o'clock and 11 o'clock, respectively. <br />The machinery consists of three hydraulic gianter two in the <br />pit and one at the dump. Also one water wheel, of 40 h/P/capacity; <br />and one Leyner oompresuor, Prom which they operate three pneumatic <br />air flrills, Por drilling boulders. At present they drill Prom 200 <br />to 250 boulders per day. The loading ie,dona by ono man, and the <br />PSring takes plane at noon. The Gravel deposit is located in the <br />canon oP the north Pork oP the San Miguel River, and at present, <br />they are malting a cut through a 300 ft. bank of slide or gravel. <br />The waste water from the River is carried by the,pit by means <br />of a flume, 800 Pt. long, 12 ft. wide, and 4 Pt. deep,, and, by the <br />sluiae box, below the pit, through a flume oP the same dimenslona.., <br />At the present time they are working; about 36 men, four on tho' <br />night shift, ten on the afternoon shift, and the balance on the <br />day shift. <br />Tha boarding house is eituateAon the southeast of the <br />present workings, on a ridge between the old channel and the <br />present channel oP the river. <br />All of the men working at the mina board there. At this <br />time they are workln6 one blaakemith and helper, two carpenters, <br />eight pipe men, and the balartoe are oommon planer mina laborers. <br />Their average alsatt up per month is about Seven Thousand <br />pol'lare. <br />
