TABLE TWO -- FREMONT COUNTY
MINE NAME COMMENTS ON FEATURES __
Rex Carbon No. 2 S: Two subsidence troughs. One trough 25' long, 10' wide, 3' deep; second trough 45' long,
5' wide, 2' to 3' deep; both due to collapse over rooms.
Reclamation plans -- Place a concrete bulkhead against the existing concrete-lined main
portal, use controlled blasting to collapse the ventilation incline, and backfill the open
ad it which leads directly to workings. All depressions around the inclines and ad it will
be backfilled with coal waste available from nearby active mines. Backfilled areas will be
topsoiled and revegetated (may be an active mining permit area).
Rockvale No. 3 Z: Production from Nonac (Nomac?) and Rockvale (Prentiss) Beds.
Rockvale No. 4 F: Coal waste bank on fire. Waste spread out in blanket-like form over an area of about two
acres. Coal waste probably averages 1' to 3' in thickness, may be as much as 10' thick in
places. From 1970 to 1980 the waste bank has periodically caught fire. Ignition may have
been caused by grass fires or by spontaneous combustion of finely comminuted coal. In the
past, fires have burned over local areas of waste bank and have either been put out or have
gone out naturally. In the fall of 1980 an area about 50' by 70' was burning.
On several occasions during the past decade unwary children and pets have been burned while
playing in the area. These accidents occur because the surface of the burning area appears
to be normal and may even be cool to the touch; a few inches below the surface, however,
temperatures are high enough to inflict severe burns.
Royal Gorge *: Two vertical openings. Opening of hoist shaft is 10' square and 80' deep, barbed wire
fence around opening is in poor condition; shaft appears to be intact to first mining
level. Opening of air shaft is 10' square and 15' deep; barbed wire fence around opening.
Access deterrent in poor condition.
Key to unique features symbols: Z Multiple mining zones
* Mine opening information
Reclamation and/or plans -- Table Two S Subsidence features
lists hazard abatement work F Mine fires
+ Discrepancy between two sources D Mine drainage -47-
